Born and raised in Pennsylvania, the son of Thomas Leaming Smith and Natalie Lucas Smith, he and his wife Anne moved to Marblehead MA in 1951 where they raised their 3 children before moving to New London, NH in 1979.
He attended The Hill School and Princeton University before joining the Navy in 1943. He served his tour in the south pacific piloting a PBM (a reconnaissance sea plane). His squadron was the first to land in Tokyo Bay after the surrender of Japan.
He worked in Boston in the marine insurance industry until his retirement in 1979.
A lifelong sailor he was an active member of the Eastern Yacht Club in Marblehead, serving on the council and race committees for many years.
He spent time cruising the coast of Maine and sailing in Mass Bay. His greatest love was being with his family and watching his 6 grandchildren grow in to the wonderful, loving adults they are. He was thrilled with the arrival of his first great-grandchildren last year, and meeting them on his
90th birthday.
He leaves his daughter Nancy Hood and husband Jay, of Marblehead and their children Taylor, Jason and wife Anna, and Dylan and two great grandchildren Elibet and Ivy: his daughter Debba and husband Rich of Shelburne VT and their children Hadley and Alex: his daughter-in-law Kathy of Falmouth ME and her daughter Jessica, four nieces and one nephew. He was pre-deceased by his wife Anne, his son Henry and his brother Thomas Leaming Smith Jr.
