MARBLEHEAD – Susan Claire (Kiernan) Scogland, 73, a lifelong resident of Marblehead, passed away on January 29, 2021 in Marblehead. She was the best friend and beloved wife of over 52 years of Richard E. Scogland.
Susan was born in Salem, the daughter of the late William and Shirley (Michaud) Kiernan. She graduated from Marblehead High School with the class of 1965 and received her bachelor’s degree from University of Massachusetts \ Amherst. Susan taught second grade children at Coffin Elementary School in Marblehead for several years. After becoming a Licensed Practical Nurse she worked at the Mary Alley Hospital in Marblehead, then for Harbor Medical Group now, North Shore Physicians Group on Widger Road in Marblehead for over 20 years until her retirement. Susan loved spending time with friends and family, entertaining at her house or dining out in Marblehead. She was a longtime member of The Beach Club in Swampscott, MA. Susan was an active member of the Junior Aid Society on the North Shore and thoroughly enjoyed their fundraising performances. She grew to enjoy camping with family but really was a huge fan of her travels to Aruba with Richie and longtime friends The Peabody’s. In the winter she would join her family skiing at Sunday River in Maine; and for somebody who did not like cold, wind, speed, or heights, she put on her happy face so that her family could spend the time together. Susan was a strong woman who fought her disease until the end, her family is relieved that she can now rest easy at peace, perhaps listening to her favorite John Denver once more.
Susan was the loving mother of Richard W. Scogland and his former wife, Elissa, of Marblehead, Jeffrey P. Scogland and his wife, Stephanie of Marblehead; the cherished grandmother of Parker, Griffin, Jacob and Isabelle, the dear sister-in-law of Steven Scogland and his wife, Kathy of Hopkinton, and Carol Anderson and her husband, Bill of Richmond, VA.
Due to the pandemic, a Memorial Service and Celebration of Susan’s Life is planned in June. Arrangements are under the care of Eustis & Cornell of Marblehead. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Susan’s name to The Alzheimer's Association.
