Doris Jean (Cripe) Mulasmajic, of Marengo, passed away September 18, 2023. Doris was born August 15, 1940 at Sherman Hospital in Elgin, IL to Otis E. and Ruth Lura (Nee Ettinger) Cripe of Coral, IL. She grew up in Coral/Marengo.
Doris went to Nurses Training at Swedish American Hospital in Rockford. After her training, she worked at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago. She met Dzemal Mulasmajic in the city. They were married on April 25, 1964 at Marengo United Methodist Church. They lived in Chicago for 2 more years, and she attended North Park College to complete her BSN degree. At the same time she was teaching student nurses at Illinois Masonic Hospital, until they moved out to Palatine, IL to start a family. It was there, their 2 daughters, Lura Mina and Sara Rukija were born. After 5 years in Palatine, Dzemal liked Marengo so much that they moved there, where they spent the rest of their 50 year marriage, until Dzemal passed away in 2015. They did a lot of traveling over the years in this country and abroad, as Dzemal had family in Bosnia (formerly Yugoslavia).
Along the way, they added a 3rd “daughter” to the family. Tatjana (Tanja) Jovancevic was a 17 year old exchange student from Yugoslavia who was staying with a family in South Dakota. When the war in Bosnia started in 1992, she could not go home, so Doris and Dzemal took her in. Tanja became part of the family, and still is.
Doris and Dzemal both became Real Estate Brokers. They started and operated Homeland Real Estate for many years. Besides their business, Doris was active in the Marengo United Methodist Church and Marengo Woman’s Club. She also volunteered at Senior Services in Crystal Lake and M.O.R.E. in Marengo. The whole family loved animals, and they had many dogs and cats over the years, all with their own unique personalities.
Doris was blessed with a strong faith and accepted Jesus as her Lord and Savior in her early 20’s. She was happy to see each one of her family do the same as the years went by. The family has always remained close and enjoyed spending a lot of time together.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her brother-in-law, Ronald Tucker. She is survived by her daughters Lura (Joseph) Asby, Sara Mulasmajic, and Tanja Jovancevic; her grandchildren Rebecca Asby and Joshua Asby; her sister Carol Tucker; and her niece and family, and nephews and family.
Her love and dedication to her family and friends will always be remembered, and her memory will be held in their hearts.
A “Celebration of Life” Service will be held on Saturday, October 28th at 11am at the Marengo First Assembly of God Church located at 22817 West Grant Highway (Route 20) Marengo, Illinois. A visitation will precede the service from 10-11am.
In Lieu of flowers, please direct Memorials to Marengo First Assembly of God Church or Marengo Rescue Squad: Lift Assist Program.
