Shirley Margaret Shoemaker, age 96, of Genoa, Illinois passed away on Sunday, May 5, 2024. She was born on July 1, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Johan and Marie (Krupa) Mumber. Shirley married her late husband Thomas Shoemaker on April 10, 1947 in Chicago.
After moving to Genoa in 1995, she worked full time until she was 89 years old and retired from Sycamore precision in Genoa after 20 years. Into her 80s, she loved traveling with her sister Joan all over the western states. In her free time, she loved gardening and was an avid reader. She enjoyed autosports and golf, but was a dedicated fan of football, whether college or NFL. The Chicago Bears were her favorite.
Many people called her a spitfire, as she was funny, sassy and smart. She will be forever missed by family and friends for her outgoing personality with a little spice.
Shirley is survived by her daughter Kimberly McKay of Montgomery; her son Todd Shoemaker of Hampshire; her daughter Joy Shoemaker of Genoa; and her sister Joan Heid of Montrose, CO. She is preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her infant son Kerry Shoemaker; her brother John Mumber; her daughter-in-law Marilyn; and her granddaughter Wendy Hacker.
Shirley had a passion for animals and donated regularly to local shelters.
