
Nickie, one of eight children, was born to Alice and Arthur La Rochelle on January 24, 1915, in Quebec, Canada. She emigrated to the United States and during World War II worked at Gorham in Providence, Rhode Island. In 1950 she married M. H. "Buzz" Desonie, moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, in 1956, and Pompano Beach, Florida, in 1959, and was widowed in 1968. In 1979 she married Michael Calo and moved to Margate, Florida; she was widowed in 1995. Nicky was a wonderful cook and talented flower arranger and decorator.
Nickie is preceded in death by her sisters Anne Cruickshank, Marge Bardell, and Julie Desrochers, and her brothers Elphage, Gerard, and Jean; her husbands M. H. "Buzz" Desonie and Michael Calo; and by her grandchild Christopher "Heather Moon" Andrews in England. She is survived by her brother, Rod La Rochelle; her daughter, Joan Anne Cruickshank Desonie Andrews Cuthbertson; two grandchildren, Jeffrey and Colin Andrews; one great-grandchild, Sophia Andrews.
Cremation will take place at Kraeer Funeral Home in Margate, Florida. A memorial service will be arranged for the end of May. The family is grateful for the condolences but in lieu of flowers, donations may be given to the Humane Society. The family would like to thank caregivers at Quality Care Assisted Living Facility and Vitas Hospice for their wonderful support and comfort during the past several years.
