SPIHER, Edward A., 81, of Fort Lauderdale passed away on January 18, 2015 with his wife, Barbara, by his side. Before coming to Oakland Park, he served four years in the United States Navy and nine years with the Vandergrift, Pennsylvania Police Department. Ed began his career with the City of Oakland Park Police Department as a police officer on November 9, 1967. Ed was promoted to the Detective Division in 1970 and worked as a Juvenile Detective and Community Relations Officer before retiring from the City on January 4, 1993.
During his tenure, he received many letters and commendations from parents, school and governmental officials for his outstanding dedication to the young people of this community. To many young adults, his large stature, but gentle heart, earned him a reputation as a direct but fair man. He spent many hours, on duty and off duty, attending school events, counseling and lecturing students. He touched many lives, especially when he was a Juvenile Officer.
His guidance, leadership and sense of humor will be missed. He was an "institution" in the City; and in his honor The City of Oakland Park name the building, Edward Spiher Recreation Center. He was very proud of that honor.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara; several nieces and nephews. Funeral Service will be on Monday, February 2, 2015 1:00 pm at South Florida National Cemetery, 6501 South State Road 7, Lake Worth, FL 33449. Arrangements by Kraeer Funeral Home, Margate www.kraeermargate.com
