Hi Mom.
I thought, for once, I have no words.
Alas, I have poured over these tributes to you and thought again- what words could I have? How dear, how sweet, how heartfelt these goodbyes have been. There's no one more deserving. How could I say what's in my heart anyway, there's so much, too much at times. I miss you, Mom.
 
You know, Larry always calls me "LME"- for "Last Minute Eileen". And here it is, the last chance I have to write to you here, the last minute this page is open.

 I remember when Daddy went to be with the Lord, I promised I would take care of you for him. I wanted to hold on to our memories there at Elmwood Court, our Home Sweet Home...so, I stayed until the very last minute, being the last one to run down the stairs and close the door behind us.
 
There's been so many last minutes for me- last minutes before graduating (you found a way to put me through college), last minutes before getting married (you found a way to give us a beautiful wedding), last minutes before giving birth (you loved Paul like your own and then cared for each as the next would come along)...all my life I was saying Thank You for being there for me. 

I tried to keep my promise to Daddy-to the very last minute. How blessed we were to have that night together. Kathy, my vigilant heroine, taking some rest, while I could hold your hand, brush your hair back and remind you of our days playing Scrabble on the porch watching the sunsets, driving to the beach to feel the wind, how honored and amazed I felt the nights you kissed MY hand when you went to sleep...so sweet, so childlike as Jesus would have a soul..giving, selfless, charming, graceful, loyal, faithful, sincere, loving,intelligent and smart,patriotic, fun, talented and of course full of wisdom...these were your attributes as a dearly esteemed Mom.

Yes, I was there at your last minute; surrounded by love, prayer, and peace. I take it as a great compliment that God waited to take you to His Home on Mother's Day as you were truly a great Mother.
 
It is literally the last minute now and as I say goodbye I miss you and (inside story) I know you miss me too! Thank you Jesus!

A year ago today                                                  
I held your hand and prayed-
The gentle breeze brushed by-
The birds sang in the sky.

The sun lit up the day
And kids were out to play-
The soothing sounds of May
Brought peace that Mother's Day.

Yet how my heart was torn,
Eileen and I forlorn-
Deciding what to do
To care, and comfort you.

Those many nights you prayed—
It was Heaven that you craved,
To see the face of God,
And Mary's loving nod…

Their promises were kept!
Your faith had never slept-
13th of May—Our Lady's feast—
Coincidence? Not in the least!

The Lord's day too was in the plan
Prepared by God's almighty hand,
The precious Body of His Son…
The grace of God—Viaticum!
Then friends surrounded,
Love abounded, as you took your final breath.
Sadness, mixed with hope and joy--
Knowing Christ defeated death!

Trust in Jesus holds us steady—
Hope in God will make us ready.
Angel Angie took you home,
Where you will never be alone.

And now upon this one-year mark,
I miss you, but the world's not dark,
Because your memory lingers here,
In many hearts that hold you dear!

I hadn't entered my message till now, but I really just want to say how much I miss you, Mom, and that so often throughout the day (and night) I think of you and want to call you to tell you about what's happening up here in MI-- or talk to you about some decision I have to make. But then I remember you had your prayer answered, and went to the Lord's house (with Angie, your angel). So I look back now, and treasure all the time I got to spend with you in the last few months, even though not all of it was easy or fun--you kept telling me to 'go have some fun!'--we talked about so many things and reminiced about your life, and Daddy and our family, and our Faith. We had such wonderful friends and neighbors do great kindnesses for us, and to be with Eileen too was a great bonus for me, cause I love her very much, and she was an indispensable support for both of us, as she handled every dimension of it with love and competence and humor :)  
     I was so happy when I found this video on my camera from our previous visit in Aug. 2011, as it expresses you so well, and crystalizes the HOPE and Trust we have in God and His mercy. So I hope to meet you on that highway someday, with all our family, where we will rejoice and LIVE,--and have alot of FUN !........ :)

My dearest friend how you are missed but now you are where you have spent your whole life to attain. We have shared a lot of joy, a lot of sorrow. but we did it together. Now I know you are still with all of us in spirit but it is still hard to let go. One time I said to you "We have not see each other for awhile how did you know this was happening /" and you replied "because I am your friend and just know these things". So very true in the worst of times you just were there. Now you have gone but will always be in my heart. My Friend.  love Shirley

I met Mrs. Kobus, my best friend's Mom, forty years ago, and I remember thinking, when I met her, that she was so ladylike and soft-spoken with so much class.  What I also came to realize soon thereafter was how devoted she was to the Blessed Mother.  While her daughter Kathy and I were freshmen at nursing school, Mrs. Kobus had us distribute under each student's door a copy of the latest Marian apparition, and we complied.  Later I got to witness a young widow's courage with dignity and grace.  Soon after graduation, I heard the agonizing news that Kathy was moving to Florida with Mrs. Kobus as well as her sister.  I can still feel the emotion as I watched the departure from Paula's street.  Mrs. Kobus had told me that very day, you are welcome in Florida any time.  Well, I took her very literally.  She had barely arrived, boxes mounted upon each other, when Dianne from nursing school and I rang the doorbell.  I learned a lot about hospitality and the extension of gracious warmth during that visit.  That night, we had a delicious pot roast meal.  That was the first of many visits to Mom Kobus's home, and I came every St. Patrick's Day for years.  I experienced many firsts with Mom Kobus—snorkeling at Boca Beach, thrifting at the best Boca stores, and discussing for hours angels, the saints, and realizing that Mrs. Kobus was someone who spoke of the second coming with real joyful anticipation.  Through the years, she encouraged me and prayed for my long-awaited spouse and children.  She had an uncanny way of always knowing in her spiritual discernment when I was troubled or had a family crisis.  She would call to check on me, and persistently but gently urge Kathy to do the same.  She was never incorrect about her hunches, and I know her intercession averted worse outcomes and gave me comfort and peace.  I had the honor and privilege a year ago February of spending my 59th birthday with Mrs. Kobus.  It was apparent that her cardiac condition had worsened and all things required great effort.  As always, she treated me like her daughter and we had a great few days together.  The week before Mom Kobus took her last breath, she used her precious breaths to participate in a specially-requested Divine Mercy chaplet for my son.  Kathy told me it was difficult, but she insisted on doing it out loud.  The Friday before her entrance to Heaven, she sent me roses as she knew my heart was troubled.  I will always treasure these roses as they may have been her last earthly gift given.  My daughter Elisa dried the roses and they remain in front of my St. Therese picture.  When I think of Mom Kobus now, I picture her jitterbugging with her beloved Paul.  She showed me love, and I loved her.

Dear Kobus Family;

I am very sorry to hear of the passing of Aunt Eileen. I only have fond memories of visiting all of you in New York during our childhood. I know after the passing of Uncle Paul she was the rock that saw your family through. Condolences to all. I do have a grin as I imagine her reunited with Uncle Paul and Dad and the rest of our family that has passed into eternal rest.

R.I.P Grandma Eileen Kobus she was were such a wonderful caring woman. She had such a beautiful heart and I know her family was very thankful having her in their lives. I know I was I enjoyed all the times we shared together. We are so happy you are in a place where there is no more pain or suffering. I will miss her and I can't wait to see you in Heaven with Jesus Christ. My parents both send their love and prayers to the Whittingham family!!!!!!!!!!!

Dear Grandma,

Thank you for being such a big part of our lives. Visiting you in Florida each summer was a highlight of our childhood and has deeply engrained your memory and example in our hearts.

I will always remember Eileen's beautiful SMILE. She used to lift our spirits whenever we would see her at Mass. She was a blessing to us all.
I still have the little bear she gave me...I named her Eileen so everytime I go past her I will think of your Mom. Our prayers are with you all.
