

James Arthur “Art” Downey, Jr., a cherished father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 29, 2024, at the age of 84 in Gatlinburg, TN. Born on February 19, 1940, in Maryville, Tennessee, Art enjoyed a rural childhood filled with simple pleasures and hard work.
Art’s personal life was marked by deep love and devotion. He was first married to Linda Yearout Downey, who passed away in 1996. Together, they raised two children—Curtis and Chuck. Art moved to Marietta, GA in 1964 to work for Dolly Madison and then later worked and retired from UPS. In 1998, Art found new joy with his second wife, Belva Bales Downey, with whom he shared 26 happy years.
Art was a dedicated grandfather to Elizabeth, Jonathan, Melinda, and Caden, who brought immense joy to his life. He was known for his tall tales, rhyming abilities, and his joking attitude. He was an active member Cedartown Seventh Day Adventist church in Cedartown, Ga.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Ruby Downey, and many brothers and sisters. He is survived by his loving wife, Belva Bales Downey; his children, Curtis Downey (wife Pamela), and Charles “Chuck” Downey (Kristina); his step-son, Rick Bales; his grandchildren, Elizabeth Downey, Jonathan Downey, Melinda Marshall (Timothy), and Caden Downey; and his siblings, Sarah Downey Aro and Donald Downey. He is also remembered fondly by numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members, all of whom were touched by his presence in their lives.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 4, 2024 from 4 pm 7 pm at Carmichael Funeral home in Marietta, Georgia. Funeral services will be held on Monday, August 5, with visitation at 12 pm and service at 1 pm in the chapel of Carmichael Funeral Home in Marietta, Georgia with Rev. Larry Sandidge officiating. Interment will follow immediately after services at Kennesaw Memorial Cemetery. The family invites friends and loved ones to join them in honoring a man whose life was a testament to his love for the Lord, strength, and devotion.
