

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sisters, Viola Davis and Edna Carter; and a brother, Curtis Oakes.
Mr. Oakes was the owner and operator of Row One Hour Cleaners until his retirement in 2012. Mr. Oakes was a Master Sergeant in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and served in the 4th Field Hospital. He was a member of the Chatham Heights Baptist Church. He enjoyed playing golf.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Carlene Oakes, daughters, Susan Smith and husband Harry of Oak Hill, Va., Shelia Grogan and husband Mike of Martinsville; son Stephen Oakes of Martinsville; brothers, Eugene Oakes of Martinsville, Melvin Oakes of Union Hall and Roger Oakes of Burlington, N.C.; grandchildren, Brandon Grogan, Brett Grogan, Jake Smith and Lindsey Smith.
The Funeral Service will be held Saturday, November 7, 2015 at 12:00 p.m. at McKee Stone Funeral Home with Dr. Michael Hatfield officiating. The family will receive friends from 10:30 a.m. 12:00 p.m. prior to the service. Interment will be at Roselawn Burial Park.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the American Heart Association or a charity of the donor’s choice.
