Hubert Elmer Kiser Jr.

Dr. Hubert Elmer “Puck” Kiser, Jr., 87 of Martinsville, Virginia passed away peacefully on October 26, 2018. Dr. Kiser was born on June 10, 1931, the son of Hubert Elmer Kiser, Sr. and Virginia Lee Strange Kiser, in Tazewell, Virginia.

Dr. Kiser graduated Cum Laude from Hampden-Sydney College, from the Medical College of Virginia with honors, and from Columbia University, New York, where he was vice-president of his class.

A captain in the United States Air Force, Dr. Kiser was in the Reserves from 1959 until 1972. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Martinsville, Virginia, past president of the Rotary Club of Bluefield, West Virginia, and a Paul Harris Fellow. “Puck” was a member of the Virginia Society Sons of the American Revolution and was past president of the Lunch and Fellowship (LAF) Group of Martinsville, Virginia.

Professionally Dr. Kiser was past president of the Southern Association of Orthodontists, past president of the Virginia and West Virginia orthodontic associations and served as a consultant to the American Board of Orthodontists. He was an adjunct clinical instructor at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry. Dr. Kiser wrote articles and lectured about orthodontics and professional ethics.

As an author, Dr. Kiser published a collection of personal stories in 1998 ‘Only In Tazewell II’ to benefit the Crab Orchard Museum in Tazewell, Virginia, where he served as chairman of the board. Dr. Kiser also served on the Tazewell Community Hospital Foundation Board.

Dr. Kiser was a member of the American Association of Orthodontists and a charter member of the College of Diplomates of the American Board of Orthodontists. He was a Fellow in the American College of Dentists and received the Southern Association of Orthodontists Citizenship Award, the Oren Oliver Distinguished Service Award and was recognized as a Pioneer of the Specialty in 2009. The National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution awarded “Puck” with a certificate of award in community service in 2002 in Bluefield, West Virginia.

Dr. Kiser and his wife Anne were avid travelers. They visited all 50 states and the 7 continents of the World. The Kisers traveled to Europe 13 times and visited over 80 countries.

Dr. Kiser is survived by his wife of 63 years, Anne Troxler Kiser of Martinsville, Virginia; his son, Dr. Marshall Kent Kiser of Radford, Virginia; his daughter, Kimberly Kiser Snyder and her husband, Dr. Edward Philip Snyder of Martinsville, Virginia. Dr. Kiser is survived by 5 grandchildren, Edward Ghent Snyder and his wife, Jennifer, of Mechanicsville, Virginia, Marshall Hampton Snyder of North Chicago, Illinois, Katherine Ryan Snyder of Richmond, Virginia, William Gillespie Kiser and Marshall Bowen Kiser of Radford, Virginia.

Dr. Kiser is also survived by three nieces Mrs. Douglas Sheorn of Columbia, South Carolina, Mrs. Bill Rice of Mill Spring, North Carolina and Ms. Dana Reid Darden Copeland of Virginia Beach, Virginia, three nephews, Marshall Fisher of Hickory, North Carolina, Jeffrey Fisher of Indialantic, Florida and Edwin Adams Darden, IV of Virginia Beach, Virginia, their spouses and children. Dr. Kiser was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert Elmer Kiser, Sr. and Virginia Lee Strange Kiser, his sister Nancy Kiser Fisher of Camden, South Carolina and his grandson Harrison Trent Kiser.

Visitation will be on Thursday, November 1st from 6 to 8 pm at McKee-Stone Funeral Home, 109 Broad Street, Martinsville, VA. The funeral service will be held on Friday, November 2nd at 11 am at The First United Methodist Church, 146 East Main Street, Martinsville, VA 24112 with Pastor Keith Ritchie presiding. Burial will be private. A reception in celebration of “Puck’s“ life will be held at Chatmoss Country Club at 550 Mount Olivet Road, Martinsville, VA, immediately following the funeral service.

In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be made to First United Methodist Church or to the SPCA of Martinsville-Henry County at 132 Joseph Martin Highway, Martinsville, VA 24112
