Obituary of Marilyn B Fisher
Marilyn Byrne Fisher, 84, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2021 after a prolonged battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. Born in Syracuse on May 12, 1937, she grew up in Skaneateles New York where she met her future husband James R. Fisher, also a lifelong resident of Skaneateles. She graduated from SUNY Potsdam with a Bachelor’s degree in Education and married Jim in 1957. They started their family in Syracuse NY and had two sons. They moved to Schenectady in 1965. After raising her sons and substitute teaching, she taught full time elementary school in the Schenectady City School system from which she retired in 1995. One of the most memorable legacies the family will always cherish is “Cookie Day” where all the family gather the day after Thanksgiving to bake quite literally thousands of cookies. Marilyn started this tradition decades ago to keep the children busy the day after Thanksgiving and it continues to this day. After Jim and Marilyn retired, they moved to Wilmington NC where they made friends and she found new interests that included sewing beautiful quilts and volunteering at the Topsail Island Turtle Hospital. In 2010 they moved to Kings Grant Retirement Community in Martinsville Virginia. Marilyn is survived by her loving husband James Rice Fisher, sons David Byrne Fisher (Lisa) and Bradley James Fisher (Sharon), Grandchildren, Stephanie Mae Fisher and Kevin Byrne Fisher (Sydney). Nieces and nephews who will miss Aunt Marilyn greatly are Priscilla Maddock (John), Douglas Hamlin (Pamela), Steven Cole (Laura), Matthew Cole (Linda) and Carin Cole (Gage). Marilyn was pre-deceased by her sister Marcia Cole (Dick) and her sister-in-law Mary Jane Hamlin (Morris). There will be a service at Kings Grant chapel later in the summer. Burial will be private in the family plot in Skaneateles. The family is eternally grateful for the care and compassion she received from caregivers at Kings Grant. Anyone wanting to make donations are encouraged to donate in her memory to Sunnyside Communities Fellowship
