Tony had a long career in the baking industry and was at the forefront of major changes resulting in bagels becoming a staple food.
He moved from Trenton, New Jersey in 1956 to join the founder of Amster Bagels who opened the first bagel bakery in the Midwest on the East side of Cleveland. Tony was the operations manager and principal baker and became a member of the Bakers and Confectionery Union during a career that
lasted 47 years. He invented a new product – the pizza bagel – which is now sold in most major food store chains. He was involved in the initial development of bagels as a frozen food product and the production of different flavored bagels that are now commonplace. He was admired for his dedication to his career.
He was tireless worker who maintained an unmatched and exhausting work schedule until 2003.
Tony was a man of great courage. He personally experienced two oven explosions with serious injuries, But that did not stop him from continuing to arrive at the bakery in the middle of the night and continue to light the ovens that could have ended his career.
Tony was an outstanding mentor to young people in the business. His training skills and patience helped many young people become outstanding employees and they would regularly visit him after they moved on to other careers because of their deep admiration of Tony.
