In Loving Memory of Gilbert Brenot July 20, 1954 – April 16, 2025 It is with deep sorrow and much love that we mourn the passing of our beloved father, Gilbert Brenot, who left us on April 16, 2025, at the age of 70.
Born on July 20 in Mont-de-Marsan, France, Gilbert was a devoted father, brother, friend—and your fiery neighborhood Frenchman. He was known for his deep kindness, boundless generosity, and unmistakably loud personality. Gilbert spent his life building a culinary legacy, and through his passion and tireless work, he made a lasting impact on the city of Cleveland. For over 40 years, Gilbert left his mark on French and Mediterranean cuisine. His career began in Cleveland at The Lion and the Lamb. He went on to become the former owner of Maxi’s in Little Italy—one of his most successful and cherished ventures. He finished his professional journey at Serenite Restaurant and Culinary Institute in Medina, where he mentored many with his sharp skill and signature flair. Gilbert was featured on many local TV programs for his culinary expertise and was especially known for his calamari, frog legs, and tiramisu. He even made a cameo appearance in the movie Welcome to Collinwood. Another one of his biggest achievements was being featured in the Oscar-nominated documentary Knife Skills, which spotlighted Edwin’s Leadership & Restaurant Institute—an organization close to his heart. He is survived by his three children: Chloe (Will), Madeleine, and Benjamin (Becky); his two grandchildren, Larry and Adelaide; and his brothers, Michel (Brigitte) and Christian. Gilbert was preceded in death by his parents, Collette and André, and his sister, Gisèle.
Gilbert found joy in cooking, teaching, playing poker, and savoring a chilled Grey Goose martini. He will be remembered for his warm smile, his generous spirit, his mentorship, and the countless classic “Gilbert stories” that continue to bring laughter and love to those who knew him. A celebration of his life will be held on May 9th at DiCicco & Sons Funeral Home, with visitation beginning at 3pm and ending at 8pm. All who knew and loved Gilbert are welcome to attend and honor his remarkable life. Flowers can be sent to the DiCicco & Sons Funeral Home. Donations can made to the GoFundMe made in Gilbert’s name to cover the memorial services and future Celebration of Life (date to be determined). He will be carried on through our memories and all the lives he has touched. Merci pour les souvenirs.
