With profound sadness, we share the passing of Allan Ivan Poms, 90 of Miami, Florida on August 9. Allan was loved by everyone who knew him as being a kind, honest and intelligent man, and a loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, and uncle. He was born in Washington D.C. in 1935 and was a successful athlete and student growing up. He earned a degree in Architecture from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and then an M.S. in Building Engineering and Construction from MIT. In his illustrious career, Allan became the chief architect for the City of Miami. His legacy can be seen in the towering Miami skyline, and in many parks and marinas, including the former Mel Reese golf course, at which he had a lane named in his honor. Allan also did a stint in the reserves in service to his country.
Allan loved his family deeply, and is survived by his loving wife, Lili Poms, his sons, Doug (Mark) and Eric (Krista), his grandchildren Julia, Justin and Troy, his sister, Joy Bojan, brother, Bryan Poms, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. Allan is preceded in death by his parents, Sam and Frieda Poms, sister Bonnie Poms, brothers-in-law, Mel Rubin and Louis Bojan and nephew, Michael Scholz.
Allan was an avid golfer, hitting the links weekly, especially at his beloved Mel Reese Golf Course. He was a mentor and teacher to younger golfers, and volunteered at the First Tee Miami tournaments for emerging golfers. Throughout his life, he could spend hours watching golf matches and other sporting events on TV.
He loved ice cream (a trademark of the Poms family) and finished every evening with a scoop. It seems appropriate that he had ice cream for his last meal.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, 11:30 am in the chapel of Mt. Nebo Kendall, 5900 SW 77 Ave, Miami, FL 33143.
