We mourn the loss of Barry Lewis Halpern. A dedicated and caring physician and friend, he supported his patients, friends, and family with kindness, compassion, and love. Docbarrito made your medical needs his priority. No issue was too small, no stone was left unturned. He was unusually generous with his time and unparalleled expertise.
Barry’s interests were wide, and his knowledge was deep. He was an avid golfer, softball pitcher, Life Master in bridge, ping pong champion, an encyclopedia of all things baseball, and a lover of classical music. Often seen walking dog Koufax, Barry could and did talk to everyone he encountered, finding common ground and sharing life experiences and interests with neighbors young and old. He was always up for a catch with the neighborhood kids, and if it mattered to you, it mattered to him.
Barry was a graduate of Central High School in Philadelphia (1955), the University of Pennsylvania (1959, Phi Beta Kappa), and the University of Pennsylvania Medical School (1963). He was the Chief of Staff and a Man of the Year at South Miami Hospital, as well as a 30-year volunteer professor of cardiology at the University of Miami Medical School.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Sheila (Auerbach) Halpern, siblings Paul and Marsha Halpern, Jay and Saundra Halpern, and Joy and Tod Mammuth; children Adam and Lisa Halpern, Rochelle Yankwitt and Robert Barter; grandchildren Flora Kaplan, Hannah and Adam Tomczak, Noa Halpern, Ruthie Yankwitt, and Casey Yankwitt; and his beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, August 31, 2025, at 11am at Riverside Gordon Memorial Chapel, 5900 SW 77th Ave, Miami, FL 33143. Donations in Barry’s memory, supporting his grandson’s special needs community, can be made at partnerscreatingcommunity.org/partners-foundation.
