I. Richard “Dick” Jacobs, who would’ve been 88 next month, and who led a full and adventurous life, died Saturday, October 14, 2023, at Kindred Hospital in Coral Gables Florida, following several torturous weeks of health challenges, being in and out of Hospitals and Rehabilitation Centers, with Respiratory Distress, including Covid. All are thankful for the care and attention provided to him by his good friends Rose and Dervis.
Dick was born November 22, 1935, in Philadelphia, to his parents, Carlyn and David Jacobs, who predeceased him. He was also predeceased by his cherished daughter, Carlyn Blair Jacobs. Dick is survived by his former wife, Paula Jacobs, and their son Jonathan Jacobs. Dick is also survived by his grandsons (Jonathan’s sons), Harrison Jacobs and Malcolm Jacobs, and their mother, Paula Smith.
After graduating from the University of Miami Law School in 1960, he served as a passionate State Prosecutor under the then State Attorney Richard Gerstein. Upon leaving the State Attorney’s office and opening his own Law Office, he represented numerous and various clients in Criminal and Personal Injury matters. He was a practicing attorney and Member of the Florida Bar for over fifty years.
Dick was a devoted member of Temple Israel for over 60 years, and his philanthropic efforts have touched numerous charitable organizations, particularly ones focusing on the care of animals. Over the years he also found great joy in his cats (most of which had unusual names), traveling, the Opera, the Ballet, his friends and companions, and skiing.
For those that knew Dick well, we will cherish our memories of his humor, off-color jokes, and amazing story telling. If you were one of Dick’s neighbors at Gables Waterway Towers, you will have fond memories of Dick bringing out his two lighted reindeer onto his balcony for the holidays.
A Memorial Mass was organized by one of his neighbors at Gables Waterways Towers, which was held on Saturday, October 21st at 5:30 PM at St. Hugh Catholic Church, to be a shared memorial for Susan Sommers. Yes, Dick would be happy to know his neighbors put this together for him, and he would smile knowing he is sharing a memorial with a famous attractive blonde, who he would have liked to have met during his lifetime.
There will be a Memorial Service for Dick at Riverside Gordon Memorial Chapels, 5900 SW 77th Avenue, on Thursday, October 26th at 2:00 PM.
Dick’s wishes were to be cremated and he would joke that he wanted his ashes spread at the Grotto of the Playboy Mansion, a place, in his words “he always wanted to visit, but was never invited”.
In lieu of flowers, charitable donations can be made in his honor, to your favorite animal charities, (such as The Humane Society of Greater Miami or the Cat Network of Miami, Florida), or to the charity of your choice.
A memorial service for DICK will be held Thursday, October 26, 2023 at 2:00 PM at Riverside Gordon Memorial Chapels at Mount Nebo (Kendall), 5900 SW 77th Ave, Miami, FL 33143.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.RiversideGordonMemorialChapels.com for the Jacobs family.
