Katz, L. Melvin 97, of Miami Florida passed on June 18, 2018. Born in Greenville, South Carolina and graduated from Miami High. He received his BA from the University of North Carolina, chapel Hill and MS and Specialist in Education from the University of Miami. He was a loving husband to Hazel C. Katz, who predeceased him in June, 2014, having shared a loving marriage for 63 years. Mel served in World War II holding the rank of Lt. Commander in the US Navy. He was a retired Science Teacher having taught at Madison Jr. High in Miami. He was a member of many service and academic organizations among those being The Lions club, The Elks of Miami, Phi delta Kappa International and Jewish War Vets, as well as being a Mason, 32nd Degree, and a Shriner. Mel was a brother in Tau Epsilon Phi—Omega chapter, and a Member of Temple Beth Am in Pinecrest, Fl. Mel is predeceased by brother Herbert Katz, and Sylvia Schwartz. He is survived by children Emily Jo Katz of Miami, Fl, Frank H. (Jan) Katz of Savannah, GA, Terrie Sue (Bryan) Katz of San Antonio Fl, grandchildren Steven Ghulamani of Gainesville, FL, Harris Katz of Atlanta, GA, Donald (Amy) Katz of Atlanta, GA, Sandee Wallace of Tallahassee, FL, and Scott Katz of Atlanta, GA. Great Grandchildren Caleb Ghulamani son of Steven Ghulamani, Sylvia, Leo, and Oliver, children of Donald (Amy) Katz, David son of Sandee Katz, and Sister Frances Cohn of Holmdel, NJ.
Services scheduled for 11 am, on Thursday, June21, at Temple Beth Am 5950 SW 88th Street Pinecrest, Fl with Rabbi Judith Kempler officiating. Burial to follow the Services at Mount Nebo Cemetery in Miami.
