Oh Dad, How I miss you. Life without you is different to be sure. You have a great-grandson - Cori’s baby boy is named Nathan, after you. You would be thrilled. He’s a precious boy and Cori is an amazing mother. You would be so proud. One year later and I still can hear your voice, your words. They ring in my head….and I cherish every syllable….You are my hero, my advisor, my teacher….sometimes the pain of missing you is overwhelming, but then I remember what you said to me: “You have made me proud,” and I hope I will continue to do so. I love you Dad….

I sent this lines by email also I prefer to normally send such a letter the old fashioned way but I know that my handwriting deteriorated and can hardly be read. 
I was shocked to hear, that Carl passed away. I was expecting bad news after I talked to him on the phone in Vermont. I wanted to tell him, that Alan Woll died only a few weeks after his wife Janice. I realized that Carl did not react normal so that I told Roswitha, that was not Carl as I used to know him for more than 50 years, a lifetime. 
He became 94 years and he was most of his life healthy and in really good shape physically and even more mentally. He played tennis long after I gave up and golf even longer. He took lessons in the University of Miami when he was already over 90 and I had the feeling he will never pass away.
One of my best friends, like a brother as you said, is gone and the world is not the same as before. Fifty years is a very long time and I will miss Carl like a member of my family. It is difficult to describe in words, but we were connected 50 years and had many success stories. We lost from time to time but we stood up and fought back. 
We donated to his former university.
I wish you and your family strength during the coming weeks and months. I will keep Carl in my memories until my time comes.

Growing up around the corner from Ellen in Teaneck created so many fond memories of her and her dad.  Mr. Hellman was always there for a science project or tennis match. It was wonderful to reunite with Ellen in Atlanta over 15 years ago. Ellen and her dad developed a special relationship over the past years. It’s a blessing that they shared love and forgiveness with each other in recent months.  I’m hopeful that Ellen finds strength and peace from all the things that mattered to her and her dad. May his memory be a blessing for all he knew and loved. 
We will continue to support the MS Society in honor of Ellen’s strength and valor. 

I had the privilege of taking care of Carls dental needs for over 30 years. He was one of the reasons that made what I did so special. His stories and advice were always enjoyed. I considered him a friend. My last memory of him was recently playing golf with him and his "young buddies" at Miami Shore CC...it was special.  He also gave me advice to never retire....I didn't listen to that one!  May his memory be a blessing. 

Dear Ellen and members of her family. I got to know Mr. Hellman when Ellen and I were 8 years old and shared a tennis coach. On occasion her Dad would pick us up and would come in to watch us play. He reveled in the fact that Ellen was a great athlete. He was a man of great accomplishment and despised fanfare. Ellen would tell me how her dad would go around the dinner table and ask "what did you do today to make a difference?"

When Ellen decided to become a Nurse practitioner he wasn't quite sure exactly what that was. Once she began to practice he was so proud of her and her accomplishments. His family was everything to him. Although he was a man of great accomplishment he hated the fanfare and fuss.

This summer upon her return from spending time and taking care of Mr. Hellman in his declining health Ellen said her father was at his happiest in the Green Mountains of Vermont. He told her he loved looking out at the beauty of the mountains and had always loved his summers up there sharing time with his children and grandchildren. His legacy will be one of unfettered accomplishment and love of family. May his memory be a blessing to all he knew and loved.

A man leaves a legacy beyond what he sees in his own time.  Carl's grandchildren and their mother Debbie have given honor to the Hellman name, living in the generous and erudite spirit of their beloved grandfather.  Their greatness and accomplishments will forever carry Carl's gifts forward, and humanity will be measurably better for that.

My Uncle Carl was one of the most accomplished persons that I have ever met.

He approached his life - like his work - with a keen analytic mind that was always looking for a solution or at least a better way.

While geography and work responsibilities separated us over the years, when we did get together he was always a gracious host and a superb storyteller.

No story was more fascinating than his recounting of the people he had met and the places he had been during his remarkable life. 

From his service in the Pacific during WWll and his post-war schooling at Syracuse, to his travels for work that took him near and far, he lived a life that truly exemplified the Greatest Generation.

May his soul be bound in the Bonds of Eternal Life.
