I am sad to hear of Ace's passing.  My father grew up with him in Hialeah and they remained good friends.  

I have fond memories of camping with him and his wife and visiting them when they lived in Alachua.  It was in Alachua that Ace built a houseboat to sail around the world on. It inspired my father, but the idea didn't get much traction. 

It has been decades since I last heard about him, and stumbled upon this when seeing if I could locate him. I don't know if he knew my father died over a decade ago.  My condolences to his family and friends.


Alton served  his country honorably.  I am saddened by the injuries he suffered in Vietnam and the mistreatment he suffered at the hands of the U.S. government upon his return.  He deserved better. At long last he is no longer suffering - Rest In Peace, brother.

You were a true brother through thick and thin. It was an honor to know you. 

You went too young.

When I think of Alton I’m reminded of a song by John Prine “Sam Stone”.  It’s about a Vietnam veteran that had a hard time after his return from the war zone.  Alton never got over it and could never outlive it. Now you’re at peace brother - One Love...

Alton Grew up in Hialeah Fl.  He went to Hialeah High School.  After High School Alton Joined the Navy and became a Corpsman.  As a Corpsman in Vietnam, Alton's job was to save the lives of Marines wounded during combat.

Alton was severely wounded and spent the rest of his life in and out of VA hospitals.

After coming home from Vietnam Alton became a member of Vietnam Veterans Against the War.  He became the coordinator of VVAW for Dade County Fl.

Due to his antiwar efforts Alton became a target of Federal, State and local law enforcement, culminating in his arrest for Conspiracy to disrupt the 1972 Republican convention in Miami Fl.  The case was known as the Gainesville 8 and in 1973 all eight defendants were acquitted.

I lost contact with Alton after that.

Alton served his country in war, was wounded in combat, received a Purple Heart and was disabled the rest of his life.

Alton did not allow his wounds to keep him from speaking out and working to end the US war against Vietnam.

Rest in Peace my Friend, life was hard for you and your service to you country during and after the war will not be forgotten.
