John Torres Van Eepoel, 78, passed away peacefully with his family on October 24, 2023 in Jacksonville, FL. He was born in Edmonton, Alberta Canada and raised in Tampa, FL. Subsequently, he resided in Jacksonville, FL and Atlanta, GA due to his 32 year career with Delta Airlines. He was educated at Christ the King Elementary, and graduated from Jesuit High School and St. Leo College.
John was fun-loving and engaging with quite a vibrant personality. He had a very quick wit and viewed situations with humor and optimism. He had his airline pilot’s license which nourished his appreciation of travel and interesting adventures. He thoroughly enjoyed entertaining his friends at home, which enabled him to share his delight for cooking and fine wine from his collection. He loved literature, with a focus on history and current affairs, which enabled him to enjoy in-depth conversations with anyone on a wide range of topics. However, his enduring legacy is his warm, kind and generous spirit, and his sense of loyalty to his family and friends.
John is preceded in death by his parents, Margie and Ed Van Eepoel. He is survived by his sister, Louisa Torres Van Eepoel; beloved friend, Ronnie Gladden; god-daughter Lauren Curtis; god-son Omer King Hebert, and many cousins from the Torres and Van Eepoel families. In addition, we are very grateful for the dedicated and compassionate team of caregivers my brother had for many years: Scott Gladden, Dorothy Edwards, Cindy and Michael Cato, Whitney Dopico, Stacy Terry and concierge Drs. Brian and Tea Stevens.
Funeral Mass was at St. Luke’s Catholic Church, Middleburg, Fl on October 30th at noon with interment and reception that followed at Hardage-Giddens Holly Hill. There will be a private family Memorial Mass in Tampa, FL on November 11th at 1pm. In lieu of flowers, should you want to send a contribution, we recommend Jesuit High School or the charity of your choice.
