

His funeral service will be held 2:00 P.M. Monday, October 29, at Philadelphia Presbyterian Church, 11501 Bain School Road, Mint Hill. Interment will follow in Sunset Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 12:30 P.M. until service time at the church on Monday.
Fred was born on July 26, 1911, in Huntersville, NC. He is the son of the late William Orr Brown and Minnie Christenbury Brown. Fred is preceded in death by his son, Fred O. Brown, Jr., his three brothers, Clyde, Banks, and William Brown, and his sister, Lois Porter. He is survived by his sister, Mary Benard, and his life-long partner and wife of 74 years, Martha Elizabeth Brown. Fred and Martha attended Philadelphia Presbyterian Church where Fred taught Sunday School for 35 years (now named the Fred Brown Class) and served as an Officer in every position within the church except Presbyterian Women. He was named Elder Emeritus, awarded the honor of carrying the Bain Cane (carried by the oldest living member of the church), and received a special recognition by the church on his 100th birthday, proclaiming his exceptional work. In the Masonic Order, Fred held the Certified Lecturer designation for 35 years, Past Master of Matthews Masonic Lodge, District Deputy Grand Lecturer in the Lodge of NC, District Deputy Grand Master in the Lodge of NC, and Honorary Life Member of Matthews Masonic Lodge. He is also survived by two children, Jean B. Peterson and her husband, Kenneth Peterson, Timothy D. Brown and his wife, Rebecca Brown. He was loved and will be greatly missed by his eight grandchildren, Beth Edge, Leta Costello, Chris Vargo, Matthew Brown, Stephen Brown, Benjamin Brown, Tammy Harty and Andrew Brown. He is also survived by thirteen great-grandchildren. Fred Brown's greatest joy was interacting with friends, family and the exceptional caregivers at The Cove, Wilora Lake Lodge. He was always kind and gracious, and everyone who visited felt welcome. He was a founding member of the Mint Hill Volunteer Fire Department, beloved Sunday School Teacher, friend to all who knew him, and Granddaddy Brown to a family that adored him.
