He was born on April 18, 1939 in Yonkers, NY to William M. Black and Iva Watterson Black. His parents moved to North Carolina shortly after he was born. He was a member of Philadelphia Presbyterian Church in Mint Hill.
Mr. Black graduated from East Mecklenburg HS, King's Business College and attended CPCC and UNCC for his educational studies.
Mr. Black owned and operated the Mint Hill 5 & 10 from 1959-1977. Then in 1980 he started teaching in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System until he retired in 2000. He touched many children's lives through his 20 years that he was in the school system. He also taught Sunday School for 31 years at his church, was a member of the Historical Committee. He was instrumental in the formation of the Mint Hill Jaycees in the 1960's and was a charter Member of the Mint Hill Historical Society. He also served as Treasurer of the Mint Hill Volunteer Fire Department from 1972-1977. Mr. Black was the author of a children's book, "Mary Rabbit's Prize Pie". John loved spending his free time at Lake Tillery as well as with his grandchildren. He was an avid collector of lighthouses.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carroll Wilson Black.
John is survived by his children; Michael (Pam) Black and Melissa Black; grandchildren, Savannah and Cody Black, and 2 step-grandchildren, Ricky (Kacie) Richardson and Alex Fox; great grandchildren, Brynleigh and Callie Richardson, Saylor and Oakleigh Fox.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 17, 2021 from 6:00 to 8:00pm at McEwen Funeral Service - Mint Hill Chapel. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, February 18, 2021 at 2:00pm in the chapel at McEwen Funeral Service - Mint Hill Chapel.
