Barbara G. Helms

It is with broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Barbara Griffin Helms on April 2, 2025. After the severe onset of acute pancreatitis, Barbara passed peacefully into the arms of Jesus surrounded by her family.

Barbara was born on October 29, 1958, in Monroe to Robert and Sarah Griffin.

She was a graduate from Wingate College with a Masters degree in Social Work. She retired after 26 years of service from Union County Social Services.

A contented homebody, Barbara loved spoiling her precious dogs (Jack, Buddy, Snoopy, Toby, Lucy, and Dolly) and beautifying her home and garden. Spending time with her husband of thirty-seven years, Steve, was her greatest joy.

Barbara was a comfort and support to all who knew her. Well-known for her kindness and generosity; Barbara was always thoughtful in remembering birthdays and anniversaries. Moments that were special to other people were of particular importance to her because more than anything she enjoyed doing for others and making them feel loved. In short, Barbara lived her life as her Savior Jesus Christ did; in the service of her community and with love to everybody. Barbara would wish the family to extend many thanks to all those who have offered prayers and support during this difficult time.

Barbara is preceded in death by her father Robert Griffin, and great niece Lee Ann Griffin. Barbara’s untimely death leaves behind her devoted husband Steve; mother Sarah; brother Keith (Gail); daughter Tonya Helms (Ed); nieces Faye Richards (David), Ginger Shaffer (Keith), and Jennifer Prickett (George); and nephew Scott Funderburk.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday April 8, 2025, at 2:00PM at McEwen Funeral Home located at 204 S Main St, Monroe. The family will be receiving friends who wish to pay their respects at a visitation from 6:00 to 8:00PM on Monday evening.
