

Gwen was born June 30, 1940 to Frank and Ethel Sustar. She was raised in Union County with one sister and one brother. She attended Indian Trail High School where she was a cheerleader. She married her high school sweetheart Raymond Lee Hartis on June 25, 1960 at Sardis Baptist Church, Indian Trail, NC where she was a member her entire life and even served as choir director for several years. After their time at Fort Knox, Kentucky they came back to Indian Trail. At that time, she worked several jobs, including PCA in Matthews, and then quit to start a family. During that time, she went back to school to get her teaching degree from UNC Charlotte. She subsequently taught in the Union County School System until she retired. She was a Who’s Who Among American Teachers Award winner in 1996. She loved the beach, the lake, being outdoors and traveling with friends and family. She loved her family as well as her church family.
There will be a graveside viewing at 10:30 AM on Saturday, March 19 followed by a celebration service at 11 AM. These services will be held at Sardis Baptist Church in Indian Trail.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond Hartis and her two brothers: Eric Sustar and John Thomas Sustar (infant).
She is survived by her one daughter: Dawn Hartis Davis and husband Scott Davis, one son: David Ray Hartis and wife Cindy Smith Hartis, seven grandchildren: Caleb Hartis, Jacob Hartis, Stephen Hartis, Erin Davis, Carrie Davis, Stephie Davis and Trent Davis, two great grandchildren: Charlee Anne Hartis and Cathryn Hartis, and her sister Zee Sustar Hunter and husband Paul Hunter.
