Joe Alson Hargette

A devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, Joe lived a life marked by hard work, faith, and deep love for those around him.

Born in Union County in 1930, Joe was raised with strong family values and a steadfast work ethic. He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War, an experience that shaped his character and instilled in him a lifelong sense of duty and resilience.

After his time in the military, Joe worked for many years as a diesel mechanic-a career that suited his sharp mind and capable hands. Whether elbow-deep in an engine, tending to his garden, “Papaw” took pride in his work and found joy in the simple, honest moments of life.

Joe was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary Arden Hargette; his son, Joe Hargette, Jr.; his parents, Robert and Rachel Hargett; and his eight siblings. He is survived by his son, Wayne Hargette (Jeannie); grandchildren, Michael, Jennifer, Johnathan (Ginny), and Andrew (Mollie); and six great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to his later years.

Joe was known for his love of NASCAR, his green thumb in the garden, and his natural ability to connect with people. He never met a stranger and always greeted those he met with a hug or a handshake.

His legacy of love, faith, and resilience will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

A visitation with the family will be held on Sunday, October 5, 2025, from 6:00 pm until 8:00 pm at McEwen Funeral Home of Monroe, located at 204 South Main Street, Monroe, North Carolina. There will be a graveside burial service on Monday, October 6, 2025, at 2:30 pm at Lakeland Memorial Park, located at 1901 Lancaster Avenue, Monroe, North Carolina.
