

Roland was born on April 28, 1927. He is the son of the late Allen and Clyde Greene English. He was also preceded in death by his sister Ethel English McCullough and brother James English.
Roland is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Dorothy Ashe English; his sister, Frances English Yandle; his son, Errol English and daughter-in-law Deborah English; his daughter, Sonya English Stafford and son-in-law, David Stafford; his grand-children Amanda Stafford and Benjamin Stafford; his step-granddaughters Lona Houpt and Erin Cardillo; and his step-great-grandchildren Andrew, Gabriella and Madison Houpt, and Olivia, Sophia, Harry and Nina Cardillo.
After attending Monroe High School, Roland joined the US Coast Guard during the final year of WWII where he served aboard the USS Gen M C Meigs and helped bring home thousands of troops from both the European and Pacific theaters. He was proud to serve his country and had many amazing stories to tell.
After the Coast Guard, Roland attended Western Carolina University where he met his bride, Dorothy Ashe English. After graduating from Western Carolina in 1955 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Roland joined the faculty of Monroe High School where he taught algebra and business math. Roland returned to Western Carolina and earned a Master’s Degree in Education and became the Principal of Waccamaw School in Brunswick County NC. Roland retired after a 40 year career in the NC public school system.
Roland was very active his entire life. He enjoyed farming, fishing, and hunting and also raised quite a few hunting dogs. Roland was a skilled craftsman and could build or fix almost anything, and always used his handyman talents to help other people. But most of all, he was a loving and much-loved husband, father, and grandfather.
Services for Roland William English will be held Saturday, August 29th, 2015 at Calvary Baptist Church, 2518 Lancaster Highway, Monroe, North Carolina. Visitation will begin at 9:30am followed by a Memorial Service at 11:00am. Burial Service at the Monroe City Cemetery will immediately follow the Memorial Service.
