

Lt. Col. (Ret.) Donald A. Brewer, Sr., 88, of Montgomery, AL died Friday, January 20, 2017 after a brief illness with lung cancer. Born in Pikeville, KY October 4, 1928, He graduated from the United States Naval Academy 1951 and Married Patsy Ruth Everett of Bryan, TX July 25, 1952, who preceded him in death. He was a United States Air Force pilot and instructor for 22 years including tours of duty as a fighter pilot in the Korean War and Vietnam War and taught math and science courses at Saint James School for 19 years. He started the Montgomery Rose Society and received much pleasure from growing roses; had a lifelong interest in trains due to his father working for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad Line; had great pleasure in building HO gauge model train engines and running trains for his grandchildren’s delight. A Lifelong faithful member of the United Methodist Church and was a member of First United Methodist Church, Montgomery and also recently attended Perry Hill Methodist Church as well. He was the role model of a devoted husband, father and grandfather mentor and friend exemplifying the highest standards of hard work, dedication and integrity in everything he did. He is survived by son, Donald “Don” A. Brewer, Jr. (Joy); daughter, Martha Brewer Cavanaugh, grandchildren: Donald “Bo” A. Brewer, III; Morgan Brewer, Abbey Brewer, Emily Cavanaugh, and Hayden Cavanaugh; Michael Ann Jackson (A.J.); Lauren Hutcheson (Paul); and Elizabeth Barrett, great grandchildren: Andrew “Drew” Jackson, Jr., Barrett Jackson, Mary Michael Hutcheson, Paul (Hutch) Hutcheson, III. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends. The family wishes to thank the staffs of Baptist East Hospital and Crowne Rehab for their recent loving care. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Salvation Army, or First United Methodist or Perry Hill Methodist Churches, Montgomery. A graveside service will be held at Alabama Heritage Cemetery on Monday, January 23, 2017 at 3:00 p.m.
