Born and raised in Montgomery, Ala., Kathy Mahaney grew up at Cloverdale Baptist Church and graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in 1973 and then graduated from Troy University in 1977. Kathy was a friend to everyone; never a stranger to anyone she met. She was fun-loving, always joyful and never without a glass of sweet tea. Always showing hospitality to strangers, Kathy embodied the love of Christ to whomever she encountered.
Kathy was active in Phi Mu sorority, Junior League of Montgomery, First Baptist Church Montgomery, Trinity Presbyterian School, and raising her two beloved daughters and all their activities. Kathy was always the snack mom for every event and was always driving for Trinity field trip carpools.
Kathy loved to garden; picking endless weeds in her yard and keeping it immaculate. She loved visiting the beach-even if it was raining and cold. Kathy loved going to the movies, especially visiting The Capri Theater (formerly The Clover). Kathy loved eating out and trying new restaurants and was never the same after Corsinos Italian closed downtown. Kathy was always baking something sweet for her dear husband, Pat. Most of all, Kathy loved spending every moment with her family-especially her granddaughter Lucy. One of her favorite things to do was have dance parties in the kitchen with her daughters and share her love of classic rock and pop music.
Kathy was a devoted wife to her treasured husband Pat and always held the fort down when he was off with the Army or traveling overseas as a defense contractor. She loved Pat fondly and was always supportive of his career. Meanwhile Kathy worked at Maxwell AFB for almost 15 years working in the legal department/JAG office and as special assistant to the base General.
She is survived by her husband of 37 years, Patrick Mahaney, two daughters, Elizabeth Walden (Charlie), Caroline Holladay (Wells) and one granddaughter named for her, Lucy Elizabeth Walden. Also survived by her siblings, Sylvia Payne Hamm (Stan), Ginger Payne Snyder (Joe) and George Edward Payne (Kathy) and many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews. Preceded in death by her loving parents Mr. and Mrs. Richard Coleman Payne, her eldest brother Richard Courtney Payne and her adored miniature schnauzer Sophie.
In lieu of flowers, please make contributions in Kathy’s memory to Parkinson Association of Alabama, Inc., Alzheimer’s Association of Alabama or the Montgomery Humane Society.
The funeral will be held Thursday, Nov. 18 at Cloverdale Baptist Church. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. with the funeral service following at 11 a.m.
