Lowell Benson Sikes

15 July, 19327 January, 2021

Sikes, Lowell Benson, 88, long-time resident of Montgomery, passed away suddenly at home on January 7, 2021. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Jo Sikes, and parents, Jim and Maude Sikes. He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Marian Sikes, of Montgomery; his son, Derek Sikes (Tracie) and one granddaughter, Dereka Sikes – all of Gilbert, Arizona; two step-daughters, Barbara Fields (Ron) and Sharon Long (Dan), and one step-son, Bayron Knight, Jr.

Lowell was born in Bainbridge, Georgia on July 15, 1932, to Jim and Maude Sikes. He lived his childhood through the Great Depression and World War II. As a young man, he proudly served his country for 20 years, cumulatively, in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean and Vietnam War eras, with a brief stint as a radio personality along the way. Upon retirement from the military, he worked as a Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician for the Veterans Administration, retiring from there in 1987.

He was a faithful, well-admired member of Capitol Heights Baptist Church in Montgomery.

He is remembered as energetic, easygoing, saintly patient, cheerful, eager to learn, and willing to go the extra mile in all he did, particularly when it came to helping others. He was fond of all things mechanical, applying his natural mechanical aptitude to a long, successful medical maintenance career and crafting many high-quality, homemade devices to improve his house and cars. He also cherished his memories of riding and working on motorized bikes as a child and touring Europe on motorcycle as a young adult. Lowell was a loving, caring husband and father, loyal friend and humble, honest, Godly man, and he will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, January 13, 2021, at Alabama Heritage Funeral Home, with Pastor Warren Culver and Pastor Russell Zwerner officiating. Burial will follow in Alabama Heritage Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Alabama Heritage on Wednesday from 1:00 - 2:00 p.m.

In accordance with COVID-19 prevention guidelines, we ask that all attendees wear face coverings and exercise appropriate social distancing.
