Michael S. Newman

Michael S. Newman, CDR, USN, (ret.) passed away on Sunday, March 18, 2012. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Mr. Newman was a 1969 graduate of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD and earned a Master’s Degree from Mississippi State University. He was a Vietnam Veteran, naval aviator and attack pilot for 26 years and was Past Commander (twice) of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 96, past president of the Retired Officers Association of Montgomery and Chairman of the Board of the Tommy Waites Prison Ministries. He was active in two churches: Brewer’s Memorial Baptist Church and Woodland Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his father, Col. James W. Newman, (Col. USA, ret). He is survived by his wife, Susan Hall Newman; children, William (Ginny) Newman, Lt. Thomas (Marie) Newman, USN and Lisa (Thomas) Wheeler; six grandchildren, Adam and Hailey Newman, Emma and Lilly Newman and Thomas and Alice Wheeler; his mother, Mary Joyce Newman; six brothers; two sisters and a multitude of nieces and nephews. Mike has been selected to join “the great cloud of witnesses,” so he will be watching you. Have a great Navy day.

Visitation will be on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 at Alabama Heritage Funeral Home from 12 – 2 p.m. Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, March 21, 2012 in the Chapel of Alabama Heritage Funeral Home with full military honors.
