OBITUARY

Alexander "Jay" Strachan

17 September, 1953 – 7 October, 2025
IN THE CARE OF

First Memorial Funeral Services

A caring community of family and friends mourns the sudden loss of a wonderful brother, uncle, and friend.

The eldest of three children born to Alexander (Sandy) and Betty Strachan of Courtenay, Jay is survived by his sisters Shannon Forbes and Kelly Strachan; his nieces Alexis Forbes (Jordan Rombough) and Andrea Heidema (Devon), as well as his great-nephew and great-niece, Daxton and Emilia Heidema.

Design and art played a central role in Jay’s life. He studied architectural drafting at NAIT and had a lifelong passion for interior design, architecture, and watercolour painting. His masterpiece, however, was his French chateau, which he designed and had built on Gabriola, where he hosted family and friends.

Travel brought joy to Jay. His home was filled with unique collectibles and beautiful souvenirs from his travels, as well as watercolour paintings he created during his various painting retreats in rural France. He also made wonderful memories and connections while curling and playing slow-pitch. These experiences helped foster the many lifelong friendships Jay maintained—often kept alive through his annual Christmas letters!

Jay lived in Vancouver for many years, where he worked at Langara College, retiring as the Director of Facilities and Purchasing, before moving to Gabriola.

Jay loved life, family, and friends. All of us who knew and loved him will never forget the laughter, storytelling, good food, and wine that were part of every gathering. We are especially grateful to his many friends who supported him when he developed IPF.

At Jay’s request, no memorial service will be held. Instead, we invite all who knew and loved him to raise a glass and toast his memory at a dinner with friends.
