Jack Mattice passed peacefully at home on the morning of May 28, 2026 at the age of 83 with his beloved wife Lucy holding his hand. After facing many health challenges over the years, including a recent lung cancer diagnosis in April, he met every moment with courage and the kind of humor that made even the hardest days lighter. He was deeply grateful to his family and friends who visited, laughed and reminisced with him, gave love and support in his final days. Above all, he was grateful for his devoted wife Lucy, whose unwavering care and tenderness gave him the dignity to pass at home.
Jack leaves behind his wife Lucy, with whom he recently celebrated 35 years of marriage and 45 years of life side by side. He is remembered fondly by a large and blended family of children, stepchildren, spouses, cousins, nieces, nephews, and his much loved grandchildren, all of whom held a special place in his heart.
Born in Prince Rupert in 1943, Jack was the youngest of the Mattice clan and spent his early years roaming the wilds of Whonnock, BC. Jack often reminisced about his childhood, especially spending much of his days in the bush with his older brother Dennis, hunting and fishing. Jack was a simple man with a lifetime of hunting, fishing and logging stories, some true, some questionable and all told with a twinkle in his eye and a great big grin.
It’s fair to say that Jack left an impression on everyone who crossed his path. He had a natural gift for making friends wherever he went. Known for his hat hair, wild stories, quick wit, and ability to turn even the simplest moment into a memorable one, he brought comfort and laughter in equal measure.
Jack loved his games and good company, known in many cribbage circles, he never missed a chance to play cards and if you were lucky, he may have even let you win a hand. Jack enjoyed daily scrabble matches with Lucy and hosting weekly scrabble matches with good friends, where the competition was friendly, but the bragging rights and banter were priceless.
Above all, Jack loved his family and friends, near and far, with a full and generous heart. His presence filled a room; his absence will be felt, but the legendary Jack Mattice will forever live in our hearts.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Sunday, September 13, 2026 @ 10:30am–1:00pm at BC Legion Branch Mt. Benson 256 - 1630 E. Wellington Rd, Nanaimo, BC.
