With sadness, we announce the passing of our dear friend, Caroline Grimmer.
Caroline was born and raised in St. Stephen, New Brunswick. She completed her Home Economics degree in Charlottetown, PEI, and taught in Summerside for 5 years. Then her independent spirit led her west to Nanaimo. She taught at Nanaimo District Secondary School from 1969 to 1986, and at Wellington Secondary School until her retirement in 1999. In addition to being a devoted teacher, Caroline spent many years as Department Head. She mentored new teachers and developed many lasting friendships along the way.
Caroline was a skilled baker and sewer. She baked for friends and church, and for years made her renowned Christmas cakes for the church Christmas sale. She made beautiful embroidered, knitted, and quilted creations for friends and family.
Caroline’s Christian faith was a quiet guide throughout her life. She was a long-time, active member of St. Paul’s Anglican Church, where she fulfilled many responsibilities over the years. The liturgical seasonal banners she sewed will remain her lasting legacy at St. Paul’s.
Caroline enjoyed farm life in her youth, and loved animals and the outdoors throughout her life. She delighted in her cats, feeding her hummingbirds, and tending her roses. She walked regularly in Planta Park and Neck Point, always attentive to the displays of nature there and from her seaside apartment.
Caroline was predeceased by her father, Herbert; her mother, Ruth; and her brother, Harley. She leaves behind her sister-in-law, Anne; her nephews, Allan (Amber) and Jamie; her cousins, Lee, Sue, Tom (Hui)and family; grand-nieces, Lorelei and Natalie; and her grandnephew, Bradley, and her close friends.
We will miss her quiet, practical approach to life, her dry sense of humour, and her generosity.
We thank the caring staff at the Palliative Care Unit at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital who cared for Caroline in her final days.
A celebration of Caroline’s life will be held on December 5th at 2 pm at St. Paul’s Anglican Church in Nanaimo.
