Cecilia Cathleen Schmid, aged 67, passed away peacefully on September 15, 2025, with family at her side and her grandbabies’ hands in hers, after living with ALS-FTD.
She began her journey into motherhood at just 17, and despite the challenges, she raised two pretty decent humans — Ngaire Rees (Dennis Spika) and Michael Rees (Jay Landry) — who will forever be grateful for her love, grit, and guidance.
She built a fulfilling career as a long-time manager with Coast Capital Savings, where she was respected for her leadership and dedication. Later, she began a second career with BC Ferries, where she became known for her ability to get the job done while bringing humor and joy to the workplace. Her colleagues will remember her as both hardworking and fun-loving.
Of all her roles in life, being “Grandma” was the one Cecilia treasured most. Her granddaughters, Kenzie and Brynn, will forever remember the twinkle-light princess tent set up in her dining room, the whispered “don’t tell mom” moments, and the endless love and laughter she poured into them. She was also grateful for the steadfast support of her granddaughters' dad, Drew McIntyre, who stood by her during her illness.
She will be dearly missed by her devoted best friend, Maureen Thomson, who stood by her side through every stage of life- usually with a glass of wine in hand and unwavering love in her heart.
She was predeceased by her parents, Ralph and Ngaire Wicks, step-mom Suzy, and by the love of her life, Robert Schmid, with whom she shared many cherished years filled with laughter and shenanigans.
Cecilia will also be remembered by her spouse, Robert Sieben, her "buttercup" Holly, and many extended family and friends.
Her warmth, resilience, and joy for life will be carried forward in the hearts of all who knew her.
A celebration of Cecilia's life was shared with family and friends just a week before her peaceful passing. It was an evening she truly loved, filled with laughter, stories, and beautiful memories. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the ALS Society of BC.
The family extends a heartfelt thank-you to the BC ALS Clinic, the incredible nurses, specialists, and caregivers with Vancouver Island Health, and the palliative care team at NRGH, whose compassion and care made her journey more peaceful.
