Christopher William Mather, of Nanaimo, British Columbia, passed away peacefully on August 6, 2026, after a long and remarkable life, surrounded by people who loved him.
Born on April 30,1939 in Kirkland Lake, Ontario, Chris lived a life defined by curiosity, service, adventure and an unwavering interest in people. He was a lifelong learner who never seemed to stop asking questions, discovering new ideas, or finding something new and exciting to explore.
Chris attended the University of Sudbury and later graduated from Emmanuel College at the University of Toronto, Class of 1968. Early in his career, he served as a Minister with the United Church of Canada. His path eventually led him into the world of finance and administration, where he worked as a financial officer for various governments, schools and colleges. He became a Certified General Accountant, bringing to his work the same dedication, intelligence and commitment that characterized so much of his life.
But Chris was so much more than his education and career. He was an adventurer, a thinker, and above all, a people person. In his early days he loved to canoe the lakes of Ontario in summer and cross-country ski in winter. His love of the outdoors and being active continued with his love of riding his bicycle, hiking and travelling with their trailer with his beloved Gwynne. He also embraced opportunities to travel to new places, experience different cultures and learn from the people he met along the way. He was an avid reader and enjoyed an eclectic taste in music reflected in his joint collection of cd's, tapes and vinyl. He also enjoyed a good game of chess and as with chess, his continued love of learning remained with him throughout his life.
Chris had a genuine interest in people and their stories and had a remarkable ability to connect with people. He loved helping others and could strike up a conversation with almost anyone. A chance encounter could easily turn into a long and fascinating discussion. He also connected with people through his love of food. He loved to cook and serve good food for people to enjoy. He developed his skills, even explored international cuisine. Friends and family all have stories of their favourite meals or special holiday meals – with occasional memories of rare experiments that didn't quite turn out as planned!
Chris will be deeply missed by his loving partner Gwynne Christie and by his four surviving children, Andy, Jenny, Sheila and Heidi. He also leaves behind six grandchildren and two great grandchildren, countless friends, colleagues and people whose lives he touched through his kindness, generosity, humour, conversations and willingness to help.
Chris approached life with an open mind and a sense of wonder. He lived a life of purpose and curiosity, believed in people, enjoyed the journey and never stopped learning. His legacy will live on in the family and friends who loved him, in the stories they share and in the many lives made better by knowing him.
At Chris' request no formal service will be held. A small, private gathering will take place to celebrate his life.
Donations in Chris' name may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Nanaimo Community Hospice Society.
