Aunty Connie’s nieces and nephews are in the dozens but she loved them all and kept a special book with everyone’s birthday information.
Connie had a long and satisfying life. Her early years were in the Cypress River area on an Icelandic family wheat farm where she became the big sister to her siblings as they experienced farm life including the Depression years of the 1930’s. Connie was working in Ashern Manitoba as a young adult when she met Orbery McGiffin (Orbie) they were soon married and began their family in Ashern Manitoba, the young couple migrated thru Western Canada with more children being born in Alberta before settling in Port Alberni on Vancouver Island. Sadly Orbery passed away in late 1960, and Connie moved her young family to Nanaimo. Connie worked hard and provided her children with a safe and happy home.
Connie returned to the workforce after completing a bookkeeping course. She worked at the Nanaimo Farmers Co-op before beginning a long career in hospital clerical work first at Nanaimo Regional General Hospital followed by Vancouver General, B.C Childrens Hospital, St Mary’s and Royal Columbian in New Westminster, Surrey Memorial, and Cowichan District Hospital in Duncan. Her hard work also included hand Candling eggs (she could hold 8-10 eggs at a time as she quickly put them to a light for inspection). Family life was busy at her home on Deering St. in Harewood Connie kept a vacant lot across the road mowed and we all played softball with the rest of the neighbourhood. We had many friends and Family visit as Mom had a bright and happy outlook she loved gathering around the piano for sing-along’s often accompanied by Grandpa Andres on violin and Uncle Sverrir on banjo.
Connie met Ron Adamson in 1969 and they were married in Delta BC in 1970.Connie and Ron spent many happy years together they were always busy with work, travel and their large family giving them a rewarding life together. They retired in Duncan BC before moving back to Nanaimo in 1995. Connie and Ron were founding members of the Port Theatre and also very active with the local Heart and Stroke foundation and were happy to give back to the community.
Connie and Ron decided in 2016 to move to the ease of independent living at Sherwood House in Duncan unfortunately Ron Passed before the move but Connie enjoyed her years at Sherwood a highpoint being a trip to Manitoba to visit with her sisters, Nieces and nephews.
In closing we share a poem Connie left us:
Be not burdened with times of sorrow.
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.
My life’s been full, I savoured much,
Good friends, good times, a loved ones touch.
