

Dr. David Michael “Mike” Tod of Nanaimo, B.C., passed away peacefully on August 17th, 2026 surrounded by his family and close friends. Mike was born on April 24, 1934 in Corstorphine, Edinburgh in Scotland, the second son of the late David and Grace Tod.
Mike attended the Royal High School in Edinburgh, and from there went on to study medicine at the University of Edinburgh. Mike graduated from the University of Edinburgh Medical School in July,1958 with an MBChB and in that same month set sail for Montreal, emigrating to Canada to pursue a career in medicine.
Mike initially worked at St. Joseph’s Hospital in London, Ontario before heading west to the University of Edmonton Hospital where he did a Residency in Surgery. In 1960 he realized that general practice was a more rewarding path for him, and he took a position in Hinton, Alberta as one of four general practitioners in the town.
Always wanting to live near the water, Mike decided in 1973 to move his family to Nanaimo, B.C. where he spent the next years practicing at the Medical Arts Centre until he retired in 2003. Over the span of those more than 40 years as a family doctor, Mike touched the lives of his many patients with his excellent, gentle and thorough care.
Mike was known for his generosity, kind heart and quick wit. After his retirement, Mike enjoyed tending his garden by the lake, travelling, golfing and spending time with family and friends.
Mike was predeceased by his brother James William “Jimmy” Tod, and son Ian Michael Tod. Mike is survived by his son Colin Tod, Ian's widow and Mike's daughter-in-law Lorie Tod, and grandson Spencer Tod.
Mike’s passing has left a large hole in the lives of those who knew and loved him. He will be sorely missed but well remembered.
Mike was cremated on August 24th, 2026, and in accordance with Mike’s wishes, there will be no funeral service. Mike’s son Ian had juvenile onset diabetes, and memorial contributions to Breakthrough T1D formerly the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, are encouraged and appreciated.
