A life that began and ended on the same day, Douglas Herbert Arthur Mummery, born March 24, 1937 in Victoria, BC, passed away peacefully on March 24, 2026, on his 89th birthday.
Doug was known for being instantly likeable and genuinely social. He had an easy way about him that made people feel comfortable and he formed friendships wherever he went. Conversation came naturally to him, and he valued connection throughout his life.
He took great pride in his work over the years, including his time working on the railroad, selling cars, and driving bus. He enjoyed being around people and stayed active and engaged through each chapter of his working life.
After retirement, Doug embraced the outdoors. He spent many happy years camping and was a proud member of a close-knit camping community. He was also an avid gardener, taking great pride in growing and sharing his flowers, fruits and vegetables. Doug was skilled with his hands; able to build, fix and care for the things around him. Whether working with wood, tending to his garden, or maintaining what he owned, he believed in doing things properly and taking care of what mattered.
Family was at the centre of his life. He is survived by his loving wife, Marj; his children, Diana (Brian) and Darrell; his step children, Al and Greg and their spouses; his surviving sisters, Donna (Don) and Joanne (Murray); and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He leaves behind a legacy of kindness, connection and lifelong friendships.
He will be deeply missed and fondly remembered by all who knew him.
A private family celebration of life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers please consider making a donation to BCSPCA in his name to carry forward his love of animals.
