A proud Geordie and Canadian, George Douglas "Dougie" Ballantyne passed away peacefully at the age of 93, surrounded by his loving family in Nanaimo, BC.
Born on May 19, 1932, in Mickley, Northumberland, England, Dougie spent his early years in Prudhoe and began working in the coal mines as a young man. In 1953, he packed his bags and left the heart of Northumberland behind for a new life in Canada. Bringing with him the grit, humour, and heart of the Northeast, he embraced his adopted home of Nanaimo with pride and quickly became a beloved member of the community.
Dougie built a life full of love, laughter, and deep connections with friends and family. His unwavering devotion to his loved ones defined him, and he remained their rock until the very end. He is now reunited with his beloved wife, Audrey, and cherished daughter, Shelley, who preceded him into the afterlife. He is survived by his son Jack (Teresa); grandchildren Jeff, Adam (Julia), and Natasha (Andrew); and great-grandchildren Bodin, Porter, and wee Bobbi.
From his humble beginnings in Mickley to his rich life on Vancouver Island, Dougie’s laughter and warmth left a lasting mark on everyone he met. Ever quick with a joke and full of charm, he brought joy wherever he went.
A celebration of Dougie’s life will be held on Sunday, September 7, 2025, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM at Pleasant Valley Hall.
"Why aye, man," Dougie would say — rest easy, you canny lad. Rest in peace, Dougie. Your spirit will keep us grinning forever.
