

Jack passed on May 16th at the Nanaimo Regional General Hospital. He will be greatly missed by his loving wife Jean, children Dean and Deanna, Darren (Salan), Jennifer (Keith), Geoffrey (Cindy) and grandchildren Zachary, Ryan, Jeanine, Michael, Kiano and by brothers Harvey of Regina, Sask., his children Lewis (Wilma), Randy (Pat), Debra, Pamela Hein (Charles) and brother Bob (Dorothy) of Katepwa Beach, Sask., and their children Rob (Marquise) and Twila (Roger). Jack was preceded by his father Bob, mother Pearl, sister Joyce Mountney, his favorite Aunt Marg and numerous other aunts and uncles.
Jack was born and raised and attended school in Bethune, Sask. He earned his welding ticket in Moose Jaw. He relocated to Victoria in 1966 to work in the ship yards and then moved to Nanaimo in 1973 to work at the BC Vocational School (which later melded with Malaspina College) as a welding instructor.
He became Assistant Dean of Vocational Programs in 1982 and then Dean of Vocational Programs in 1986 until his retirement in 1999. He was an active member of the BC Vocational Deans Organization which promoted trades and vocational programs throughout the province. Jack always had the best interests of students at heart and advocated for many improvements in program curriculum, and acquisition of modern equipment and facilities in order to provide up to date training.
Jack was a competitive curler for many years and would tell the story of how he and his team missed out on being the BC representative in the Brier. He was an avid golfer and held a membership at the Nanaimo Golf Course for 45 years. He also took a great interest in horse racing and owned a partnership in a few race horses that raced out of the Vancouver track. Jack was a big fan of the Saskatchewan Roughriders and was able to attend a game last summer in their new Regina stadium.
For over 20 years Jack was an active member and volunteer with the BC Liberal Party and served as a Regional Organizer for many of those years, assisting ridings in the North Island Region. He guided and helped other members to become successful, Jack did anything and everything. He worked on a t least five provincial election campaigns, numerous fundraising events and sat on a riding board serving as Treasurer and Committee Chair of special projects. Jack was known as “the guy that gets it done”. He believed in community and giving folks a hands up. Many learned and benefited from working alongside him.
He served as a Board Member of the Nanaimo School Board, and the Nanaimo Port Authority and the BC Summer Games.
Jack’s work life as well as his participation in sports, politics, and volunteerism made him many lifelong friendships and acquaintances. He will be remembered as a thoughtful, caring, and just friend, family man and supporter of all things positive. He will be missed and remembered fondly by all who knew him.
