It is with profound sadness that the Martin Family announce that James Martin (Jim) passed away peacefully, Saturday, February 4th, 2023. Jim was born on December 17, 1943. in England during WW2, and came to Canada with his Mom, when he was 3, to start a peaceful new life with Jim's Dad. He grew up with his two Sisters and Brother, Patricia, Elsie and Ed, who have predeceased him, including his Mom, Joan and his Dad, James Edward. Jim spent his childhood growing up on 7th Street in Harewood and always had great stories, of his many adventures with kids he grew up with.
Jim married his "bride", Darlene, whom he met in Parksville. He worked at the MacMillan & Bloedel, Woodroom at Harmac for 35 years, becoming a Saw Filer and retired in 2001. He was a hard worker and enjoyed his family as they grew up, enjoying camping and fishing for many years. Jim was always willing to take on any job around his home, or helping out a neighbor, a friend or family with a project. He loved working with wood, and built a workshop which became his go-to place, becoming a self taught carpenter, or even just to sit and enjoy the company of friends or family.
Jim's built countless projects…. Bedroom furniture, computer desks, stereo cabinets, cupboards and custom projects for friends and family, building kitchens that everyone was proud of. In 1977, Jim built their family home, he hired the framing, drywall, and flooring, but literally did everything else. He was definitely "A one man band, Do it Yourselfer" He's left his mark well and will be remembered fondly by family and friends. Jim enjoyed 22 Years of Retirement enjoying life, his workshop, his family and camaraderie of friendship. We will all miss him…. his talents, his positive attitude, his kind and giving nature and his "awesome" homemade wine.
Jim is survived by his loving wife Darlene, two Sons, Jim and wife, Annmarie, Jeffrey and fiance', Gina Gunaban, three Grandchildren, Haley, Kaden and Kyle, Step Grandchildren, Ryan and Lauren, Noah and Jericho, his Cousins, Laurie Martin and Richard Martin, his Niece, Bonnie Williams and Grt. Niece, Chantelle. Also survived by extended family on his wife's side, that are equally as important, they all hold their own special memories……of Dad, Oldtimer, Papa, Gramps, Uncle and Cuz and…… "My Friend Jim"
The Martin Family would also like to thank all the amazing staff at the Nanaimo Regional Hospital that looked after Jim. All their care and efforts were greatly appreciated….Darlene and Family are planning a Celebration of Life at their home on Saturday, March 11th. 2023 between 1:00 - 4:00pm. Friends and family are welcome to join us to reflect on Jim's life and share their own stories of Jim.
