Born in Wakayama, Japan, he moved to Kamloops at age eleven, where he discovered Judo—a passion that shaped his entire life. He competed nationally and later became a dedicated sensei and referee, deeply involved with the Nanaimo Judo Club.
He worked throughout BC as a welder and pipefitter before teaching for 30 years at Malaspina College/VIU, helping train hundreds of welders. He met Sylvia in Prince George, married in 1969, and began their family in Kitimat and Kamloops before settling in Nanaimo to raise their three children.
He loved skiing, boating, fishing, diving, mushroom picking, and travelling—especially to sunny destinations. In retirement, he enjoyed Tuesday hikes, mid week skiing, and time on the water.
He was predeceased by his parents, Saburo and Nobue, and beloved grand dog, Shima. He is survived by Sylvia, his wife of 57 years; his son, Mike; daughters, Naomi (John) and Amy (Strahan); granddaughter, Maiya; brothers Kats (Eiko) and Tosh (Donna) and extended family. Our family is deeply grateful for the support of friends and the exceptional palliative care team. We will miss him every day.
A celebration of his life will be held in Nanaimo in the coming weeks. Please contact the family for details.
