It is with great sadness that our family announces the sudden passing of our mother on Tuesday September 16, 2025, at her home on Gabriola Island, BC. She left us in her 88th year, just two months shy of her 89th birthday. Fia was born November 16, 1936, in Schiedam, The Netherlands and is predeceased by her younger siblings Nellie and Dick.
After teaching kindergarten for one year in The Netherlands, she began a new life in Canada at the age of 21 with her husband Hermann Wind. Her working years in Canada were spent at Pearson International Airport with Canadian Pacific Airlines and Air Canada where she developed many lasting friendships. Her passion for travel and adventure evolved as a teenager but was heightened during her employment with the airlines. After retiring, she relocated from Southern Ontario to Gabriola Island in 2004 to be closer to her many family members already living in BC.
She is survived by her four children (Hardy, Monica, Eric, Elke) and four grandchildren (Matthew, Caitlin, Cameron, Nya). Fia will be remembered for her love of family, a soft spot she had for all pets and wildlife, participation in local Tai Chi and hiking groups, the Vancouver Canucks which she faithfully followed year after year, hobbies she pursued like knitting, gardening, listening to classical music and reading, and of course real whipped cream (no substitutes!).
Fia humbly requested that “no big deal” be made after her passing and specifically asked that there be no funeral, celebration of life, or flowers. She asked that her ashes be spread in some of her favourite locations around Gabriola Island, the place she truly loved and felt at home on.
