He is predeceased by his spouse, Marlene Mitchner, and his parents, John and Alice McFarlane.
He is survived by his three sons, Conner Merzetti, Gabriel McFarlane, and Doran Mitchner; as well as his sister, Holly McFarlane (Layne), brother, Bruce McFarlane (Susan), and their families.
Steve met the love of his life Marlene in 1987 in Toronto, Ontario. She became his lifelong partner and friend. Their family set out west and moved to Virden, MB, Vanderhoof, BC, and then to Terrace, BC. A few years after Marlene’s passing in 2010 Steve moved to Nanaimo, BC. He recently lived in Moosomin, SK before the island called him back.
Steve was a loving, kind and caring man. He devoted his life to his family. He quickly made friends wherever he moved. Steve always had a project on the go, or was busy helping others. His love for the world was demonstrated by the way he lived lightly on the land. He cherished his friends and family, going out of his way to make sure they were good, and assisting them whenever there was a job to do.
Steve could do anything and had a good knowledge of most of the major trades. He was confident working on electrical, plumbing, masonry, and was a skilled carpenter. He was a talented cook, and always delighted his guests with his hospitality. He could even turn a frozen pizza into a gourmet experience! He loved spending time in nature, and also knew where to find the best mushrooms.
He will be missed for his kindness and the warmest smile you have ever seen. We love you, Steve.
There will be a family memorial service at a later date. Friends and family who wish to make donations in his memory may choose their local food bank or Epilepsy Canada.
