

She was born January 19, 1936 in a modest farmhouse in Brooklyn, Illinois to loving parents, William Paul and Ruth Moore Hillyer. She was the 'almost' middle child of six children, three of whom survive. Shirley Freeze of Rock Island, IL, Dixie Rohn of Milan, IL, and Larry (Barbara) Hillyer of Punta Gorda, Florida. She was preceded in death by sister, Jean Hillyer Shadwell and brother, Lyle Kent Hillyer.
Doris would marry her high school sweetheart, Dr. Ronald (Gilly) Gillenwaters on November 16, 1952 and share 57 adventurous years before his passing in 2010. From this union, five wonderful children were born. Surviving are Terri Lynn Sapp of Ashville, NC, Lisa Anne Gillenwaters of Denver, Co, William (Julie) Merritt Gillenwaters of Marco Island, FL, Melissa Beth Ashworth (Gary Aspinwall) of Fort Myers, FL, and Michelle Renee Gillenwaters of Fort Myers, FL. Also surviving are eight grandchildren, Hunter, Erin, Kendra, Paige, Ben, Lindsay, Alex, and Katie; twelve great-grandchildren, Matteo, Cole, Gracie, Chance, Max, Chase, Mia, Mackenzie, Mackayla, Easton, Harper and Sailor.
Doris and Gilly raised their family on Lake Springfield, IL and then moved to Bonita Springs, FL in 1978. She enjoyed playing bridge, boating, and later in life, fell in love with the game of golf. She was an avid reader and writer and enjoyed sketching. Her biggest loves, however, were her family and friends. She loved people, laughter, and being surrounded by nature.
Doris was also an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Bonita Springs where she humbly served in many roles including moderator, teacher, Deacon and Elder.
A private service will be held in the Fall on the Memorial Garden at First Presbyterian Church.
