Although I only met Senor Dones once in Buffalo, it is obvious that he practiced the age old Puerto Rican Jibaro tradition of “sembrando su cosecha “. My lifelong schoolmate, Nancy, his daughter, embodies the harvest of steady and lovingly cultivating a mind and a spirit! Nancy, that is one of the many goals your dear father fulfilled with you and your siblings.

 Our father, Jose Dones, was a devoted husband and family man. He loved his entire family dearly and was proud of his children and grandchildren's accomplishments. He loved his church and his community.
  He was instrumental in  organizing and coordinating clubs and organizations that promoted the Puerto Rican community in Buffalo, NY.  His passion to support union issues, not only for the employees at the Bethlehem Steel Plant in Lackawanna, NY, his employer for 30 years, but, all union employees would be hard to match.  He was a fierce protector of everything he believed in, never shirking from any and all consequences. He was friend to many whom he assisted in obtaining housing, jobs, enrolling their children in school, etc. when language barriers compromised new comers when they arrived in his former hometown of Buffalo, NY. 
  He moved to Brooklyn, NY from his homeland of Puerto Rico, It was in Brooklyn, that he met the love of his life, Maria Rivera. He proudly served his country as a member of the US Air Force.  In 1956 he married Maria and moved to Buffalo, NY.  It was in Buffalo, that he and his lovely wife raised four children, Joseph , Marilyn, Nancy and Mario.  Jose loved small  business and ventured into a few of them, teaching his four children the value of working for one's self. 
  After retirement he and his wife devoted themselves to their grandchildren, especially those living in the Naples, FL area. Everyone that came into his home was welcomed and fed until they could want no more. 
  Jose was a christian who lived his christian faith by example. He wanted all his family members to know Jesus Christ. He has left this world having accomplished his greatest goal. 
  He is survived by his wife ,Maria, children, Joseph (Janet), Marilyn, Nancy and Mario (Wanda), grandchildren, Lieza, Shaina, Michelle, Rachel and Rebecca and 8 great grand children.
 He is survived by his siblings, Alicia (Ismael), Carmen (Jose Antonio), Roberto and Lucy (Julio).
