He was born in Charlottesville, Virginia in 1944 and spent much of his childhood in Bradenton, Florida. He received his undergraduate degree from Florida State University and his masters degree from Georgetown University.
Jay joined the United States Air Force in 1966 and his many assignments included three tours in Vietnam. He retired in 2004 as a Colonel after 37 years of service. His career continued as a Senior Executive Service Member with the Department of Energy. He also attended the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University and the National Defense University.
Jay returned to Florida in 1996 with his bride Kris and began a career in real estate. He was happiest at the beach with his wife and surrounded by his many friends. He was also an advocate for veterans’ support groups.
The family is very grateful for Jay’s long-time caregiver, Aurea Chaplin. Vitas Hospice also provided excellent care.
Jay will be laid to rest with full military honors in a private ceremony at the Sarasota National Cemetery, with a celebration of life at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jay’s name to the Parkinson’s Association of Southwest Florida and the Wounded Warrior Project.
