

Ruth Laird Grant 90, died October 27, 2013 at home in Naples surrounded by family. Born in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania in 1923, Ruth was a woman of superior intellect who graduated from Chatham College. She loved words and kept a dictionary nearby throughout her life, challenging friends and family about correct word usage .She was an omnivorous reader, film enthusiast, sketch artist, amateur writer, journalist and a school teacher before she married. Ruth was a lifelong volunteer, first, during WWII at Pittsburgh’s USO, a military hospital in Atlantic City for wounded soldiers, and for civil defense drills. Later she was active in the Red Cross , Junior League , University Club, and Naples Doll Club among other groups for which she served as publicist. In the 1960s,Ruth was an early activist and advocate for the developmentally disabled ,first in Parkersburg, West Virginia where she and her husband raised their family and built several businesses, and then in Naples Florida .During the 1980s. She participated on a Collier County’s advisory committee for housing and transportation for the developmentally disabled.
She is predeceased by her husband Russell J Grant Sr. and sister Martha Laird Shields. She is survived by her son Russell J. Grant Jr. Naples , daughters Christine Grant Halpern, Princeton New Jersey and Leslie Ann Grant, Naples, daughter in- Law Mary Grant, son –in-law Michael Halpern seven grandchildren and their spouses , three great grandchildren, dear friends and caregivers.
The funeral and Mass will be held at St Williams Catholic Church Saturday November 2, 11 AM. In lieu of flowers donations may gratefully be made to the Adult Day Program UCP Southwest Florida 4227 Exchange Avenue Naples, Florida 34104.
