

Betty Woodward McHale died at the age of 86, on Thursday, June 23, 2016. She was the loving and devoted wife of the late Charles E. McHale, Jr., to whom she was married for 62 years. She was preceded in death by her parents Mr. and Mrs. John W. Woodward of Columbus, Georgia. Betty is survived by her daughters: Virginia McHale Tobey of Westport, Connecticut, Cindy McHale Starling (Philip) of Hopkinsville, Kentucky and Lisa McHale Creed (Curtis) of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She is also survived by nine grandchildren: Charles McCarroll Starling (Ashley), Peter McHale Starling (Walker), Elizabeth Starling and Margot Louise Starling, Camille Creed Zaunbrecher (Davis), Elise McHale Creed, Charles Woodward Creed, John Curtis Creed, Jr. and Caroline Tobey Dolan (Jake); four great-grandchildren and a brother John W. Woodward of Columbus, Georgia. Betty received her undergraduate degree from Duke University where she was a member of Phi Beta Kappa. She received her graduate degree from Tulane School of Social Work, where she was selected as a member of Who’s Who in American College and Universities. She practiced social work part time for twenty-five years at Charity Hospital and fifteen years in private practice. She represented the School of Social Work to the Tulane Alumni Board in 1974 and was also on the State Board of the State of the Mental Health Association. Betty and Charlie where lifelong supporters of Tulane University. They were members of the Tulane Association and on the Board of Directors of the Summer Lyric Theater. Betty was a member of the Chapter of the Spirit of ’76 Daughters of the American Revolution. Funeral Services will be held at Rayne Memorial United Methodist Church, 3900 St. Charles Ave. on Saturday, June 25, 2016 at 2:00pm. Visitation will begin at 1:00pm.
