Betty Spurlock, a remarkable woman of unwavering spirit, left us on Sunday, December 7, 2025. Betty was born on July 20, 1935, in Victoria TX where she attended Nazareth Academy and graduated as valedictorian. She married Elwin "Spud" Spurlock on Oct 24, 1958 and raised a family as they traveled for Spud's job.
She is now reunited with her beloved Spud, her father Bruno Traber, her mother Margaret Traber, her brother Daniel Traber, and her sister Fern Markle.
Betty will be remembered with love by her children Sharon Spurlock (Mary Anne), David Spurlock (Karen), and Barry Spurlock (Jan), her grandsons, Michael and Isaac; and her brother, James Traber. Nieces, nephews and a legion of friends will keep her alive through their stories.
Betty was a member of the St. Philip Neri Catholic Church and was one of the first female lectors in the parish. She volunteered tutoring second graders at STAIR New Orleans and was an active participant at the Acres of Green Garden Club. She was a founding member of her neighborhood pig roast group and was honored to reign as "Ms. Pig Lips". Betty was a social butterfly who found joy in travel, gardening, and the company of friends and neighbors.
Betty loved all things New Orleans and could be found at the Economy Tent performances at every New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. She was an active member of the Newcomers Club of Greater New Orleans for 46 years, especially with their Krewe of Neophermenos, serving as a maid, Queen and Captain.
